Word/Phrase of the week: “Det ordner seg alltid for snille gutter.”

pardonmynorwegian:

I chose this phrase because it simply made me happy. Something upsetting had happened to me recently and I told one of my Norwegian friends. He comforted me, but then said, Det ordner seg alltid for snille gutter.

In English, this simply means, “It always works out for nice guys.” Literally, å ordne means to arrange, so you can kind of think of ordner seg as “work itself out”.

In other words, nice guys don’t finish last.

Norwegian word of the week: gjerne

pardonmynorwegian:

gjerneGjerne sort of translates as “gladly” or “willing.” The most often I have seen it has been in the phrase, Jeg vil gjerne … which means, “I would like to …”

Other times, it seems like it’s used as a tag word, kind of emphasizing or encouraging an action. In that case, it can sort of translate as “feel free to.”

Send gjerne din gave. Feel free to send your gift.

Sometimes it can also just be used as an affirmative after a question is asked.

Vil du ha is? Do you want ice cream?
Gjerne! Certainly!
