*Arabic (العربية al-ʿarabīyyah or عربي/عربى ʿarabī ) is a name applied to the descendants of the Classical Arabic language of the 6th century CE. This includes both the literary language (Modern Standard Arabic or Literary Arabic, used in most written documents as well as in formal spoken occasions, such as lectures and radio broadcasts) and the spoken Arabic varieties, spoken in a wide arc of territory stretching across the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is a Central Semitic language, closely related to Hebrew and the Neo-Aramaic languages, and also related to the South Semitic languages (e.g., Amharic in Ethiopia, Tigrinya in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and Mehri in Yemen and Oman) and the extinct East Semitic languages (e.g., Akkadian, first attested nearly 5,000 years ago). The written language is distinct from and more conservative than all of the spoken varieties, and the two exist in a state known as diglossia, used side-by-side for different societal functions. Ordinal numbers 1st-12th (الأعداد الترتيبية):

esperanzaaaa:

Ordinal numbers are used to rank things or to show order.  In Arabic, ordinal numbers are either masculine or feminine, and agree in gender with their nouns.  For example,

  1. I live on the 5th street. (أنا أسكن في الشارع الخامس)
  2.  Salma is my 3rd sister. (سلمى أختي الثالثة)

This table shows the ordinal numbers through 12 in Arabic.

My Inspiration

My inspiration for this blog post was the du3aa دعاء (supplication/invocation): “Yaa Hayyu/7ayyu Yaa Qayyoom bi-Rahmatika/Ra7matika Astagheethu يا حيّ يا قيّوم برحْمتك استغيث”. In English, this prayer means: “Oh Everliving, Oh Self-Subsisting, by Your Mercy, I call upou You”, or “Oh Everliving, Oh Self-Subsisting, with Your Mercy, I seek Your Assistance”.

Okay, that’s it! Shukran jazeelan شكرا جزيلا  (thank you very much) to everyone who helped me with this blog post! :) Wassalaam 3alaikum و السّلام عليكم (and Peace be unto you)

Please Keep Reading,

Sam.

Post Script:

To my readers and followers: shukran la-kum شكرا لكم (thank you) ! :)
