Some of my favourite Swedish words

  • Kura skymning (verb) - To huddle together in the gloaming, preferably around an open fire and read books and tell stories to each others.
  • Skarsnöknaster - the sound crusty snow makes when walked upon.
  • pulkbacke - a hill that you would bobsleigh down.
  • sjörök - sea fog
  • hjortronmyr - a mire where you’d find cloudberries.
  • mormorsbullar - cardamom buns made by my grandmother.
  • sträckläsa - to read a book from cover to cover without putting it down.
  • medmänsklighet - human compassion
  • skaller - shoes made of reindeer hide, where the fur’s still left.

The most commonly used ones:

  • Then hears we, and have it so good. Då hörs vi, och ha det så bra.

This is a general greeting at the end of a conversation where the the first phrase implies that you have agreed to get in touch again and the second wishes the second party well until then. 

  • I don’t feel again myself. Jag känner inte igen mig.

I am not familiar with the surroundings. 

  • I give seventeen in that. Det ger jag sjutton i.

I don’t give a damn 

  • Pull to the forest. Dra åt skogen!

Aww, get outta here! You’re kidding! 

  • How’s the lay? Hur är läget?

What’s up? 

  • Beat your self down. Slå dig ner.

  • Hello on you! Hej på dig!

Informal greeting- “How ya doin’?” might be an English equivalent.
